Chasing Your Passions

In the digital age today, there are so many ways you can pursue your passions beyond the 9-5 hustle and bustle. Avenues like promoting your clothing lines via social media, self-publishing a novels, connecting with others who are like-minded and just as goal driven as you – the world is your oyster.

As I’m vastly approaching the end of my graduate program I’m constantly trying to find ways to align my passions of writing and poetry, and somewhat fuse those aspects with my soon to be career. I’ve been blogging on different platforms for about six years now and this blog has been my first official site. So far I’ve come to find that my niche is creating – writing, telling stories, motivating, baking … you get the idea. On the other hand, having people stay interested in what you have to say is the key to success. It definitely can become daunting at times, but eventually you find your flow and werk it out.

A Lovers Ballad

… because I want to feel you
breathe you like the sweetest scent of cologne
crisp and fresh, lingering on the tip of my nose

… because I need reciprocity
see limerence ain’t easy, love alike it’s a journey
come along with me; take the leap of faith
listen to that quiet voice inside your head
constantly you shut it out and mask it with the strongest swig of Hennessy
blackout your true feelings
dance between the brink of tipsy
drunk off the love that resides within thee
awake the next morning to the hangover of your reality

The Promise

I have wanted to purchase a promise ring for myself to myself for a while now. As I was reflecting over 2015’s life events, I decided that I would buy the ring in 2016. I would no longer put it off, or wait for that special someone to buy one for me. Besides, the promise to myself would be different than the promise that the significant other would be promising to me anyway.

I wrote this declaration in my journal on Christmas Eve. 2015 was a great year all around, there were definitely some highs and lows as each year brings but I decided to move forward with this mantra that I’m calling …

The Promise:

Blessed Beyond Compare

I have so much to be thankful for this year. This time last year, on December 1, 2014 I was preparing for a life changing final fourth open heart surgery. The timing was only something that was orchestrated by God. I found out that something was a little off in terms of the lining of the valves in my heart back in May. Literally, a week before graduation my cardiologist wanted to investigate the matter. A week after returning from Vegas on a Memorial Day weekend trip with my girls, I was in the hospital preparing for a quick exploratory procedure to check out what was really going on inside my body. Not only were the walls narrowing, but the rhythm of my heartbeat was off (atrial flutter). I was a little bummed out, but used to it. Not afraid because this has been my life ever since I popped out the womb. I thought everything was going great and I’d never have to undergo another surgery. Little did I know, that wasn’t apart of the plan.

Shades of You

To the quiet girl
I hear you
Most can’t fathom your beauty and the true essence of all that you have to offer because you have been drowned out by noise
I once was you, but then one day I found my voice
Stood up for myself in the most simplest of ways
All without having to get out of hand
Outta pocket neck rolls, hand claps, and witty snap backs
Shut it down with an act of kindness
A notion that is overlooked Continue reading “Shades of You”

#SELFLOVE At Its Finest

I’ve been working on this post for a while now, and one little class discussion took this over the edge for me. My heart breaks to see so many people (girls/women especially) constantly use negative self-talk, not love themselves unconditionally, and overall ignore the love that comes from within. In my Human Sexuality class my professor challenged everyone to get ‘Out of Their Comfort Zone’ and explore something they’ve never done before, totally alone. This varied from attending cultural festivals, interacting with people you wouldn’t normally speak to, attending a church/temple and a range of other activities. Last Tuesday, we had the chance to sit at the front of the class to share our experiences and how the assignment made us feel. Continue reading “#SELFLOVE At Its Finest”

Funny How Time Flies, When You’re Having Fun?

October had to be the busiest month I’ve had in a really long time! From my birthday, to other birthday celebrations, tons of projects and papers for school – I AM TYAD! I’m happy that November is here and I can finally catch my breath. I’ve been working on a couple of blog posts and poems that I can’t wait to share with you. On top of that, I have some announcements as well!

Here’s a quick glimpse of the best month ever lol: All of the fun, shenanigans, and long nights studying for midterms, preparing for presentations and writing papers – OCTOBER in a flash.

Vingt-Quatre

I laugh at this picture because it is SO me! My good friend Jackie aka Selena as my mom calls her tagged me in this post on IG. Her tag said “So You” and I’m thinking to myself like … What’s me? Lol I get on IG and instantly start laughing and smiling.

“A classy woman with a little bit of hood in her, and a lot of God!”

It gets no better than that! I’m more like a teeny bit of hood, but I can take it there when necessary. Don’t let my cute face fool you!

WCW

It was never about being someone’s WCW but more about the respect behind it all
The acknowledgement and affirmation to the world is sweet, only if it’s not done for the accolades
See this social media facade of love can only make a fool jealous
100 plus likes on my picture and heart eye emojis won’t catch my interest
I need you to keep me engaged with metaphors and similes
Flowing together like the sweetest melodic symphony
The creator in you, only brings forth my intoxicating energy
This synergy of the two colliding with the moon
Yet these basic ass dudes only sing a different tune
Thinking that their money, and foreign cars will have my legs spread wide
Little do they know that this Queens standards are very high
Seduce me with your intellect, better yet have me speechless
It’s moments like those where I can weed out the ones who hide behind a mask
Pretending to have class when in reality
It’s all a lie.

bisous, Bree
